The Nordic Watercolour Museum – A meeting place for art, nature and people

Although I had heard about the Nordic Watercolor Museum – a meeting place for art, nature, and people, much earlier, I only recently managed to visit it. The museum is located in the small coastal town of Skärhamn on the island of Tjörn. In the museum, you can view the permanent collection, and exhibition, enjoy a cake or a sandwich, have lunch, shop at the museum store, take a break from art in the contemplation room, or, if the weather permits, swim at the nearby beach.

„The Nordic Watercolour Museum has since its inauguration in 2000 explored watercolour painting, contemporary and historically. This is done through exhibitions, research, art education and by promoting the contemporary Nordic art scene.

We break down the watercolour medium into its main components: water, pigment and paper. We look at these components from three perspectives: the watercolour as tradition, the watercolour as expression and the watercolour as concept. We broaden the meaning of the word „watercolour“ when we examine its role today and yesterday, with the goal of enriching people’s lives through exciting and powerful encounters with art.“

This modern museum, an arena for art based on water, pigment, and paper, is a place for all people, of all ages. In the museum shop you will find a carefully selected assortment of watercolour materials, literature, arts and crafts and Nordic design.

The Museum often produces films about their exhibitions and you can view material on both Facebook and YouTube.

Current Exhibition: Hans Op de Beeck / Vanishing Point 26 May – 22 September 2024

Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck is most known for his monumental installations. The solo exhibition at The Nordic Watercolour Museum presents a rich selection of large-format black-and-white watercolour paintings, along with sculptures and the artist’s new animated film „Vanishing Point“.

With Vanishing Point, the artist’s solo exhibition at The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Op de Beeck presents a large collection of more than twenty black-and-white watercolour paintings and a collection of recent sculptures, including his acclaimed monumental work Danse Macabre (2021) – a baroque, life-size monochrome sculpture of a merry-go-round, both absurdly and festively reflecting on mortality.
