Helsinki Central Library Oodi is the city’s largest design project, blending modern Finnish architecture with innovative service design. Opened in 2018, it is a popular meeting place for residents and has gained international recognition for its design and services.

The library’s development began in 1998, with extensive citizen involvement through surveys, workshops, and participatory budgeting. Over ten years, designers and experts worked together with the public to create a space that serves everyone, emphasizing community and co-creation.

Oodi is designed as a “living room for all,” offering flexible reading, learning, and event spaces. It hosts various partners, including a cinema and children’s play areas, and supports active participation through citizen panels and collaborative projects.

Architecturally, Oodi was chosen from over 500 international entries, with the winning design reflecting public wishes for tranquility, family services, and digitality. The building’s innovative design and community-driven approach have made it a landmark in Helsinki and beyond.
