Have you heard of Sculpture in Pilane? It is a sculpture park located on the beautiful island of Tjörn on the Swedish west coast, featuring a spectacular landscape, prehistoric grave fields, and contemporary artworks by leading Swedish and international artists.

Skulptur i Pilane, a private and independent initiative operated by the Pilane Heritage Museum, offers a unique fusion of art, history, and nature across eight hectares of scenic cultural landscape. This dynamic environment invites visitors to explore a diverse array of sculptures while enjoying the surrounding beauty, including grazing sheep and stunning sea views.

Exhibition Overview

Every summer, Sculpture in Pilane hosts a premier sculpture exhibition featuring world-renowned artists. This year, notable participants include Laura Ford, Andrew Sabin, Moa Israelsson, Tony Cragg, and Charlotte Gyllenhammar. These artists present their works against a backdrop that embodies both ancient history and contemporary creativity. Notably, the exhibition area is designed to function as a living landscape, encouraging exploration without the confines of traditional park layouts.

One of the central attractions within the exhibit is Jaume Plensa’s monumental sculpture “Anna,” which has become a symbolic landmark of the West Coast. This striking piece is permanently installed in Pilane and serves as a focal point for the entire region.

Visitor Information

Visitors are free to explore the grounds at their own pace. Walkers can choose to meander along marked paths or traverse open meadows and hillsides, with stunning views of the West Sea and the Bohuslän archipelago. Given the natural terrain, sturdy footwear is highly recommended, and some areas may be steep, necessitating good mobility for access to certain artworks.

Picnicking

Guests are welcome to bring picnic food but must refrain from sitting on or near the sculptures to maintain a respectful environment for all visitors. Feeding sheep is strictly prohibited.

Environmental Protection

As Pilane is a protected nature reserve and historical site, visitors are reminded not to pick flowers or disturb the local flora. Additionally, littering is strictly prohibited, and there are no waste bins in the exhibition area, so guests are encouraged to take their trash with them.

The exhibition is open daily from May 14 to September 18, from 9 AM to 7 PM.
