VALIE EXPORT (1940) is renowned for her intriguing performances and her critical examination of how the media reproduces and represents things. Her fame truly soared in the late 1960s. She is an artist with a strong feminist voice who fearlessly addresses the roles of women in society and the arts. She also raises the idea that deeply ingrained structures in society favor men when it comes to how women’s bodies are perceived.

The exhibition covers a wide range of her work from 1966 to 2009. Visitors will have the opportunity to view her early Expanded Cinema performances, symbol-laden performances, artistic photographs, language art, installations, and urban projects like „Body Configurations.“

VALIE EXPORT is a pioneer in performance and media art. She uses her own body as a canvas, effortlessly transitioning between different forms of art. She revisits her favorite themes and concepts repeatedly, presenting them in fresh and innovative ways. This exhibition provides insight into her primary concerns, such as the connection between „femininity“ and societal perceptions, the relationship between our bodies and our observations, the fusion of performance and imagery, and our interaction with the world around us.

A noteworthy aspect of the exhibition is the significance of photography in VALIE EXPORT’s work. She has employed photography in various ways, including documentation, experimentation, incorporation into her installations, and standalone art. At times, she plans her performances with photography in mind, ensuring they will be visually striking. In the 1970s, she created photographs that prompt us to contemplate the connection between images and real life, particularly within the media. She wants us to understand how these images of women and men are constructed.

This exhibition encompasses not only VALIE EXPORT’s famous works like „TOUCH CINEMA“ (1968), „Action Pants: Genital Panic,“ or „BODY SIGN ACTION“ (1970) but also features pieces she specifically created for the Albertina. These artworks offer a fresh perspective on VALIE EXPORT’s talent. „VALIE EXPORT. Retrospective“ was developed in close collaboration with the artist herself. Alongside borrowed artworks, the Albertina showcases pieces from their own collection, including action photographs, films, and installations.
