From August 10 to August 12, 2023, the city of Gothenburg (Sweden) will play host to the much-awaited Way Out West Festival. Way Out West, a multi-genre festival is located in the park of Slottsskogen. The three-day eco-friendly festival welcomes some of the largest bands in the world to Sweden. Way Out West started in 2007 with stars such as Prince, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Florence + The Machine, Neil Young, M.I.A., Alicia Keys, Stormzy, Frank Ocean, Robyn, The xx, Patti Smith, Solange, and The Cure, etc.

Festival Area

Slottsskogen has five different stages: Azalea, Flamingo, Linné, Dungen, and Höjden. Azalea and Flamingo are the two biggest ones in the middle of the area. The festival area in Slottsskogen opens at 2 pm on Thursday and 12 pm on Friday and Saturday. It closes around midnight all three days. Besides all the great acts performing at the festival area, you’ll also find amazing veggie food, several bars, and great hangout places.

Way Out West Film

Way Out West Film is the third-largest film festival in Sweden. Since 2011, it has been a vital part of Way Out West. It has hosted premieres for films such as Searching for Sugarman, The Square, Tourist, Gräns, Palme, Monica Z, and Boyhood. The films, a mixture of feature films, documentaries, TV series, and short films, are shown at independent cinema Hagabion and other theaters around Gothenburg. The screenings are free for everyone with a festival ticket.

Veggie Heaven

Since 2012, Way Out West has been a completely meat-free festival. In the first few years, the decision to go all vegetarian/vegan drew criticism – these days most visitors agree that there’s no alternative. The range of food is large and eclectic, including a Michelin-starred restaurant. In 2019, the premier of Chef’s Market was much appreciated, making Way Out West even more of a culinary experience. Of course, the festival beer, Norrlands Ljus Alkoholfri, is ecological.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a keyword for Way Out West and has been since our start in 2007. As the only festival in Sweden, and as the first music festival in the world in 2013, Way Out West holds an ISO 20121 certification. That implies sustainability on three different levels (environmental, economic, and social) and these are also the elements underpinning Way Out West’s entire sustainability work.

Volunteer

A keystone to Way Out West – the volunteers! Being a volunteer means you get to experience the festival in a unique way, helping put it all together before, during, and after. It’s also a great way to make new friends and gain new knowledge!
