“I’d Give a Kidney for a Ticket”: How a Swedish Music Festival Promotes Organ Donation

Way Out West is one of the most well-known music festivals in Scandinavia, held every August in Gothenburg, Sweden. This year, the festival takes place from August 7 to 9 and, as always, offers a carefully curated lineup of alternative, electronic, hip-hop, and indie music, along with film screenings and a wide range of cultural events. It is also known for promoting sustainability, vegetarian food, and socially engaged initiatives.

This year, tickets sold out faster than ever before. With no tickets left, FOMO (fear of missing out) kicks in hard — and people start saying they’d give just about anything to get in. One phrase you often hear: “I’d give a kidney for a ticket.”

The organizers took that phrase literally — but in a smart and humane way. They launched a campaign offering a chance to win a 3-day pass simply by signing up for the National Organ Donation Registry. This means expressing your willingness for your organs to be donated in the event of your death. In Sweden, the registry is managed by Socialstyrelsen (the National Board of Health and Welfare).

By signing up, you’re not just saying you’d give a kidney for a ticket — you’re showing real support for organ donation by being willing to help others after your death. One organ donor can save multiple lives. In the Donation Registry, you can express your preferences for donating organs and tissues, make exceptions, or withdraw your registration at any time.

This campaign combines pop culture and public health in a creative and responsible way, reminding us that solidarity doesn’t have to be just a slogan — it can be a real, life-saving action.
