The Stedelijk Museum, a museum of modern and contemporary art and design, was established as a city museum in 1874. Initially housed in the Rijksmuseum, it was relocated to its building in 1895. The Stedelijk Museum today faces the Museum Square, connecting the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and the concert hall into one large artistic quarter.
This Amsterdam museum specializes in collecting and exhibiting works of modern and contemporary art. Since its founding, it has served as both a museum and a gallery of contemporary art, as well as an institution for preserving and historicizing the works of contemporary artistic practices.
„The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a place where everyone can experience modern visual art and design.“ The Stedelijk aims to enrich people’s lives with art through its museum collection, exhibitions, publications, research, and educational programs. It provides a unique insight into the contemporary world and highlights topics that influence modern society and individual lives.
The museum possesses collections of paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries, including a significant number of works by Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Cézanne, and Mondrian, as well as works of European and American art created after 1950. Besides the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions by notable European and global artists (such as Bruce Nauman, Ulay, Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin, and many others) have been realized in the museum.
After six years of reconstruction, the Stedelijk Museum reopened to the public in September 2012, featuring the new wing (referred to as the „bathtub“ due to its shape) as the home of the museum’s permanent collection, showcasing works by artists like Piet Mondrian, Marc Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein, Barbara Kruger, or Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst. The innovative facade appears ceramic but is made from a special type of concrete that gives it a distinctive appearance.
The museum also houses a shop and a restaurant with a terrace overlooking a garden with a rich collection of sculptures.
